Pastoral Care Visitor Volunteer Training

With the support of their parish pastor and under the direction of the parish pastoral team, the role of the pastoral care visitor volunteer is to provide spiritual support to the sick, the shut-in or the incarcerated in either an institution or private home.

Pastoral Care Visitors make present God’s love and the Church’s care by bringing  comfort, spiritual support and hope to hospital patients, continuing care and assisted living residents and community shut-ins.

Bringing Communion to the Sick Workshop

This workshop is intended to offer a deeper and fuller understanding of the sacraments, with particular emphasis on the Eucharist and the theology of Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, including:

  • Proper handling and reverence of the Blessed Sacrament
  • Rituals, rites and pastoral practices
  • Visitation guidelines for various circumstances
  • Understanding the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, Spiritual Communion and Communion as Viaticum

The workshop will be of particular interest to trained Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who bring Communion to the sick & homebound either in their homes or in  hospitals and other care facilities.

How to Celebrate a Liturgy of the Word with Communion in Care Facilities Workshop

This workshop will review recommended archdiocesan guidelines and practices  for  conducting a lay led Liturgy of the Word with Communion in a hospital or care facility  setting. 

The workshop will be of particular interest to Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion  who serve in hospitals or other care facilities and would like to learn how to lead a Liturgy of  the Word with Communion.

Certificate in Catholic Studies: Foundations in Faith

Offered through Newman Theological College, Foundations in Faith offers pastoral care visitor volunteers a superb opportunity to explore the rich tradition of our Catholic faith, deepen their  understanding of its foundation in Scripture and in turn share that faith confidently in a pastoral care setting.
