No Room in the Inn campaign partners with WINGS of Providence

Edmonton churches invited to share Christmas Eve offerings with the homeless

Christian churches in Edmonton are once again joining forces at Christmas to assist the homeless through the annual No Room in the Inn campaign.

No Room in the Inn, now in its 13th year, is an appeal based on the story of Mary and Joseph, who arrived in Bethlehem to discover that there was no room for them at the inn and so were forced to take refuge in a stable until Jesus was born. Each year, church congregations and parishes are invited to donate part of their Christmas Eve collections to the campaign. Funds raised are delivered to a different housing project each year, selected by a committee of volunteers from the Edmonton & District Council of Churches and the Quality of Life Commission.

To date more than 60 congregations from eight different denominations have raised over $500,000 for projects aimed at providing safe and affordable housing for those who are in greatest need.

This year’s offering will contribute to “Our Home Next Door,” sponsored by WINGS of Providence.  This new housing project will provide 29 fully furnished self-contained units where women with children who have experienced family violence can reside as they complete the transition to independent living.

Since 1987 WINGS of Providence has helped to break the cycle of family violence by offering a shelter providing long-term accommodation and accompanying support services.

Last year, more than 12,000 women and children stayed in shelters in Alberta.  More than that number were turned away because the shelters were full.

Bob McKeon, a member of the No Room in the Inn Committee, notes that “women with their children fleeing situations of family violence are at great risk of becoming homeless.  Through this project, Christians can come together and help them make a new start in their lives.”
