Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On November 30th, 1912, what had been until then the Diocese of Saint Albert was re-fashioned as the Archdiocese of Edmonton and the Diocese of Calgary. As you are now aware, there will be a number of events throughout this Jubilee year to mark our centenary as an Archdiocese.

On this Sunday closest to the actual date of our founding, I invite all parishioners to offer particular prayers of thanks not only for the countless blessings God has bestowed upon us in the past 100 years but also for those that still await us. The season of Advent now beginning exhorts us to wakefulness, to be alert to the signs of the Lord's presence among us as we await his return. In this time of Jubilee, may we not fail to recognize with deep thanks the presence and gifts of The Lord as he leads us into the future.

In his message to the Archdiocese marking our centenary, Pope Benedict XVI expressed his confidence that our centennial will be for the Archdiocesan family "an occasion for a renewed consciousness of their Christian dignity and mission."  May we, indeed, grow in an awareness of the identity and call that is ours as disciples of Jesus Christ, so that all may come to know and embrace the saving love of God.

Yours sincerely in our Lord,

+Richard W. Smith
Archbishop of Edmonton
