DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE launched its annual Share Lent campaign this year with the participation of special guests Most Rev. Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Most Rev. Pedro Ricardo Barreto, Archbishop of Huancayo, Peru.

Archbishop Barreto, a member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace at the Vatican, was invited to represent the many communities in the Global South who are courageously striving to improve their livelihoods in the face of injustice. In his own archdiocese, he is working with the community of La Oroya, one of the most polluted places on earth, to demand norms be applied to a foreign-owned smelter to create a healthier environment.
