Roman Catholic missionaries first came to Alberta in the mid-19th century. Since then, the Catholic community has played a vital role in the development of schools, hospitals and social services. The Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton was born in 1912, when the Pope decreed that the bishop's seat would be moved from St. Albert. The Archdiocese is celebrating its centennial throughout 2012-2013.  As well this year, St. Joseph's Basilica is celebrating 50 years "above ground." Join Shamin Malmas, Archivist and Records Manager for the Archdiocese, as she presents some highlights of this important history. Her presentation,  part of the Speaker Series of the Edmonton and DIstrict Historical Society, begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, at Queen Alexandra School auditorium, 7730 - 106 Street, Edmonton. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
