Most Reverend Joseph MacNeil, our beloved Archbishop Emeritus, marked his 90th birthday on Tuesday, April 15.

His Grace served as Archbishop of Edmonton from 1973 to 1999 and continues to minister wherever he can. In all his time here, he says one of the biggest thrills -- along with hosting Pope John Paul II for a visit -- was having an Edmonton school named after him. Archbishop Richard Smith paid special tribute to Archbishop MacNeil during his homily at this year’s Chrism Mass, describing him as “a true shepherd" and "an exemplary priest.” He echoed the feelings of many when he told MacNeil: “Words really cannot express our appreciation for you and, indeed, our love for you."

Anyone who has met Archbishop MacNeil is touched by his quiet grace, his easy good humour and the ever-present twinkle in his eye. We thank God for the gift of Archbishop MacNeil, and pray that he enjoys continued good health.

In honour of Archbishop MacNeil's 90th birthday, we have posted an interactive online gallery that includes photographs from his time at Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax, as a Canon Law student in Rome, as a young priest in Nova Scotia, his Episcopal Ordination, and his 40 years of service in the Archdiocese of Edmonton.
