Christians around the world dedicate an entire week every January to pray for unity among the followers of Jesus and especially to overcome historical and present divisions that exist between church communities.

The 2015 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will officially begin this Sunday, January 18. In Edmonton, an ecumenical opening service is planned for Braemar Baptist Church, 7407 - 98 Avenue, at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Please join us to pray together and make some new friends.

Worship materials for the 2015 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity have been prepared by ecumenical leaders from Brazil, and activities for the week are meant to have a distinctly Brazilian flavour. At Edmonton City Hall, a public display about the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity includes a number of Brazilian items and will be available for for viewing all month.

Pictured above at Wednesday's launch of the display (L to R) are:

  • Father Marc Cramer, Pastor, Good Shepherd Catholic Church
  • Mr. Shiraz Kanji (Muslim), Vice-President, Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action
  • Father Tom Talentino, Priest of the Madonna House Apostolate (Marian Centre)
  • Rev. Dr. David Fekete (Swedenborgian), President, Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action
  • Father Antonio Brum Hofmeister, Pastor, Our Lady of Fatima (Portuguese) Catholic Church
  • Rev. Kevin Kraglund (Anglican), President, Edmonton & District Council of Churches.

The theme for the 2015 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is inspired by the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman (John 4:7), an encounter that invites us to try water from a different well and also to offer a little water of our own. In diversity, we enrich each other.

The Week is a privileged moment for prayer, encounter and dialogue. It is an opportunity to recognize the richness and value that are present in the other, the different, and to ask God for the gift of unity.
