“The Archdiocese of Edmonton receives with great joy the news that the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has elevated Archbishop Collins of Toronto to the Sacred College of Cardinals,” Most Rev. Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton, said today in a statement from Israel, where he is attending meetings in his role as president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.

“Cardinal-elect Collins is well known to this Archdiocese, of course, because he served as its chief shepherd from 1999 to 2006 and is well and fondly remembered. We extend to him our heartfelt congratulations and assure him of our prayerful support and accompaniment.

“On a personal note, I am thrilled with the announcement of his elevation. As a brother Bishop I know him very well and rejoice that the Pope has bestowed upon him this great honour. With many others I look forward to the wonderful gifts he will bring to the universal Church by his participation in the College of Cardinals.”
