The 2017 Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1. This day is one of two, along with Good Friday, that are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholic adults – meaning no eating meat and eating only one full meal and two smaller meals.

Priests administer ashes during Mass, and all are invited to accept the ashes on their foreheads as a visible symbol of penance. The ashes are made from blessed palm branches, taken from the previous year's palm Sunday Mass.
