The following news was shared at St. Mary Parish in Red Deer over the March 2-3 weekend, on behalf of Archbishop Richard Smith:

The Archdiocese recently received a complaint alleging misconduct by the Pastor of St. Mary’s Parish, Father Leonard Cadieux. This complaint is currently being investigated by the Archbishop’s Delegate, as required by archdiocesan policy.

Father Cadieux will not be involved in public ministry while the investigation is ongoing. Further, because of the existence of an ongoing investigation, and to ensure the privacy all parties involved, we cannot share any details about the nature of the complaint. I want to assure you, however, that this complaint did not involve allegations of sexual abuse of any kind, and did not involve any allegations of misconduct toward children.

This news is disappointing to all of us. It is important to remember that the Archdiocese is committed to safe environments in all our parishes, and that all who serve in ministry are held to the highest ethical standards. I ask also that you pray for everyone affected by this situation.

In the meantime, we will ensure that priests are available to celebrate the sacraments with the people of St. Mary’s.

Any inquiries about the above announcement should be directed to Father Adam Lech, Moderator of the Curia, or Lorraine Turchansky, Chief Communications Officer, at 780-469-1010.
