The covenant between the two dioceses was formalized three years ago, but it began years earlier and it’s deeper than others in Canada. The details are still being worked out, but the relationship is more than just financial. It’s spiritual.

As Archbishop Richard Smith consecrated the Archdiocese of Edmonton to the Blessed Virgin, he knelt before the same statue of Mary which Bishop Vital Grandin, the first bishop of the former Diocese of St. Albert, honoured in 1871 when he consecrated the diocese to Mary at that time.
